The Ile Saint Louis is one of two islands at the heart of the City of Lights. It’s almost as if someone dropped a small French village into the center of Paris. While much of Paris has modernized over the years, the Ile Saint Louis remains romantically frozen in the 17th century. It is remarkably the same as it was centuries ago. The Ile Saint Louis features typical markets, bakeries, fromageries, cafés and charming old townhouses. If you like picnics, this is a lovely place to take your lunch to the many spots along the Seine to eat and watch the boats sail by.

Many of the most popular sites in Paris are just a short walk away, including Sainte-Chapelle, the Conciergerie, the Place des Vosges and Le Marais. The cathedral of Notre Dame sits across from a wide footbridge that doubles as a stage for mimes, fire-eaters and a Captain Ahab look-alike squeezing an old accordion.

If you have only one ice cream cone in Paris, make sure it comes from Berthillon, the long-standing grande dame of glaces. The tea salon on the Ile Saint Louis is worth a visit too.
